The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros

Esperanza pesters her mother to write a note so she can have lunch at school. When her mother realizes that none of the other kids will need bag lunches, she writes a note for Esperanza. Unfortunately the lunch she packs is not what she wanted. Mother packs her a sandwich, one made of rice because the family can't afford lunch meats.
