The novel's major conflict is Esperanza's struggle to find herself and assert her individuality. Esperanza is surrounded by women, who are very different than she is. Esperanza doesn't want to conform, and she doesn't want be like everyone else.... she doesn't want to settle. Instead, she resolves the conflict by moving on and away from Mango Street, by asserting her independence, and by controlling her own destiny.
