how do things change with the main character ?

Throughout the course of the novel, Esperanza invents the person she will become: she aspires to be a writer and to overcome the limitations gender, race and class has placed upon her. (This is quoted in GradeSaver, see source link). Esperrana developes through the book from a child afraid to talk to a sexualized young woman to a mature author with a keen sense of her community.
