House on Mango Street

House on mango street

How do esperanza vivid similes such as those in this story (" the nose of that yellow Cadillac was all pleated like an alligators" [p25)] or these in LAUGHTER (" ice cream bells giggle or laughter like a pile of dishes beeaking" [p 17]) set the tone throughtout the novel?

The similes provide humor and a light-hearted tone that entertains the reader. Even while describing sometimes poor condition, the language used in the novel provokes a smile.
