Mary Conant
Mary Conant is the main character and protagonist of the novel, and is from an English Puritan family that has moved to the newly established city of Salem. Mary, young and the ideal daughter, is at peace with the Native Americans living nearby, and does not want to get into fights with them. Although she sees that the takeover of native land is wrong, she does not want to go against what her strict parents, Mr. and Mrs. Conant, have to say. After time, Mary breaks free from the ties of her parents, and starts doing what she wants to do with her life. For example, she falls in love with Charles Brown. Despite her father's wishes, she changes her ways and continues to pursue him, showing how much of a dynamic character she is.
Hobomok
A Native American guide, Hobomok brings the new white settlers to terms (most of the time) with the already established Native American villages nearby. Another main character and the namesake of the novel, Hobomok is a spiritual guide that helps the characters build a relationship with the rich natural habitat around them. Despite this, there are still logging mills in operation that decimate the forests nearby. Though friends with the white settlers, Hobomok is true to his native ways, and does not want to be "changed" by the horrible ways of civilization.
