I don't see a lot of political significance other than the historical context of Heroshima.

Elle is a young actress looking for a dazzling film career in the aftermath of the war, and decides to go to Japan. At first, she is a bit reluctant because of the happening during World War II, but she decides it is the best thing to do. The film she is planning to act in is an anti-war production.

While she is there, she meets a Japanese architect called "Him". The two exchange recollections, especially about the war, but Elle finds it is too painful to look back to her childhood days surrounded by destruction. Him tells Elle that his family was killed during the bombing of Hiroshima, but Elle doesn't seem to care as much as she should. This relationship becomes a metaphor for the political landscape of the time.
