Joaquin Phoenix

Joaquin Phoenix has won a Grammy, a Golden Globe, and been nominated for three Academy Awards throughout his career. He got his start as a child actor along with his siblings, with the encouragement of their hippie parents, who were ex-cult members. After some television roles as a child, Phoenix had a breakout film role in Ron Howard's Parenthood. In 1993, Joaquin's older brother, River, committed suicide, and Joaquin receded from the public eye for awhile.

In 1995, Joaquin returned to film in the Gus Van Sant film To Die For alongside Nicole Kidman. Next came U Turn, Inventing the Abbotts, Clay Pigeons, and The Yards. Joaquin came into mainstream popularity with his role as the evil emperor Commodus in Gladiator directed by Ridley Scott and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Other films include Quills, Buffalo Soldiers, Signs, Hotel Rwanda, Walk the Line (for which he was nominated for another Academy Award), We Own the Night, Two Lovers, I'm Still Here, The Master (for which he received his 3rd Academy Award nomination), Her, Inherent Vice, and Irrational Man.

Scarlett Johansson made her film debut in the comedy North in 1994, before gaining more widespread recognition in the films The Horse Whisperer and Ghost World. Interestingly enough, Johansson's breakout role was in another film about romantic alienation, written and directed by Spike Jonze's ex-wife, Sofia Coppola: Lost in Translation. Johansson followed this up with Girl with a Pearl Earring, A Love Song for Bobby Long, and Match Point.
