Her Body and Other Parties

Her Body and Other Parties Analysis

The book contains eight short stories full of peculiar myths that feature unspoken truths about women. The first story is “The Husband Stitch,” where the main character is a woman. The woman is the narrator of the story, and she meets her husband when he is a young boy. We learn that she was born with a green ribbon around her neck. However, her husband tries to touch the ribbon regularly. In the story, it is clear that the woman was married to get satisfied sexually. From the story, the readers get insight into how women are overlooked, particularly when addressing violence against their bodies.

“Inventory” is another story where a young woman details her sexual experiences when a virus is threatening to kill all people across the globe. “Mothers” is also a narrative in the book where the narrator remembers her relationship with an abusive partner. Another story is “Difficulty at Parties,” where the main character is a woman experiencing sexual distress. However, together with her partner, they try to watch porn videos to rebuild their sex life. Nevertheless, she only hears the thoughts of porn actors.

Generally, the book is concerned with the oppression of women in the modern world. The author uses brutality against women to showcase the cruelty meted out against women. Women's opinions and thoughts are usually ignored in the male-dominated world. The author uses short stories in the book to highlight the intensity of violence in contemporary society. The readers are provided with the opportunity to feel the oppression of women in a patriarchal society.
