The Heptameron Imagery

The Heptameron Imagery

Description of a gentleman

The narrator describes a gentleman at court as, ‘Now there was a certain gentleman who was attached to the household, an extremely tall man whose charm and good looks made him stand out among his companions.’ This is visual imagery that is created by the use of adjectives to describe the gentleman such as ‘tall’. The imagery has the effect of building a mental image in the mind of the reader of the physical appearance of the gentleman.

The Dying Man

There was a man who was so in love with a certain woman such that when he knew that his beloved was betrothed to another man he fell ill. The narrator described him as, ‘The dying man stretched out his emaciated arms and with all the strength remaining in his bones embraced her as the sole cause of his death. He placed his pale cold lips on hers…’ The imagery in this instance is visual imagery that has been built by the words, ‘emaciated’, ‘pale’ and ‘dying’. These words build a mental image in the mind of the reader of the state of the dying man.

Lady Florida’s Reaction to Amador’s Love

When Amador confessed his love for Lady Florida, she was awestruck. The narrator describes her state as, ‘The young Lady Florida changed color at his speech, the like of which she had never heard before. Then she lowered her gaze, like a mature woman, her modesty shocked.’ The imagery in this description is visual imagery. The imagery is built by the use of the simile, ‘…lowered her gaze, like a mature woman...’ The simile creates a mental picture in the mind of the reader on the condition of Florida when Amador professed his love for her.

Description of the Coming War

The narrator described a war that was being championed by the king of Tunis as, ‘So he sent a large fleet of galleys and other vessels to pillage and lay waste every inch of unguarded territory that he could find along the Spanish coasts. When the inhabitants of Barcelona saw the vast number of sailing ships looming on the horizon, they immediately sent word to their viceroy at Salces…’ The imagery in this narration is built by word such as, ‘a large fleet of galleys’ ‘lay waste’ and ‘vast number of sailing ships looming the horizon.’ These words are descriptive and they build visual imagery.
