Why does marlow place so much emphasis on the important role work plays in human life?

Marlow believed that work is necessary in order to avoid distractions. He was a skilled man, and for all of his intelligence, he liked to tinker and keep busy. I think he was one of those men who detested idleness and believed it brought trouble to those that practiced it. In context, the importance he placed upon work allowed him to remove himself from those around him.
