Theme

The spiked heads support the theme that civilized behavior is defined differently by different people, and that this same behavior asks us what "civilized" really means. In this example, we see Kurtz, who is supposedly appalled at the savagery that surrounds him perform an act as barbaric as the ones he condemns.
