Marlow had to be pretty focussed to float down the Congo River surrounded by cannibals, exploited natives, and abusive white pilgrims. Marlow also needed to be somewhat obsessed with tracking down the mysterious Kurtz to withstand such hardships. Marlow wanted to understand Africa and the heart of darkness. He wanted uncover the insidious traits of colonialism.
