There are quite a few disturbing scenes here. Marlow witnesses a group of natives in chains. He witnesses the grove of death. Here indigenous workers who are too ill to work are left to starve and die. Natives are regularly whipped for reasons that are questionable at best. He hears their cries through the night. To many of the whites there it is little more than ambient noise.
