Heart of Darkness Question Pages 2-6

Marlow describes how he ended up in Africa. He says that as a young boy, he “had a passion for maps.” What place on the map “charmed him”? Conrad is employing symbolism and an allusion through the snake – what are you supposed to understand?

I think he is referring to the Congo, particularly the river which had its own lure to seduce. Africa and the jungle as a whole can be seen in a similar context.
