Marlow is certainly more compassionate than the other Europeans in the Congo. This might not say too much because the Europeans are completely detestable to the natives: they treated them as slaves. Marlow was sickened by the whole spectacle of debauchery inflicted on the native population. I think that would count as compassionate as any white man got in this book.
