Rusdie's story is an example of magic realism. While based in reality there is the magical or fantastic that adds to the narrative core of the story. We get a sense of this magic realism when Haroun thinks stories can’t simply come out of thin air.” His father will only say that all his stories come from the great Story Sea. We later see animals that can talk as well as different worlds becoming an extension of Haroun's reality.
