What is the function of the character of Mrs. Gradgrind?

I think Mrs. Gradgrind is a perfect source of irony in the novel. It's ironic that Gradgrind chooses a wife, who is basically ignorant, has no desire to "think," and is extremely passive. Gradgrind obviously didn't think his beliefs pertained on the homefront. He wanted a wife who wouldn't get in his way.
