Louisa is very unfulfilled because she has been forced to deny her emotions. She has an emotional breakdown after being tempted into infidelity by Mr. Harthouse. Her marriage with Mr. Bounderby is soon dissolved and she never remarries. Louisa does change through the book. Initially she is not that perceptive about subtle nuances of emotion nor is she able to express emotions adequately. With the help of Sassy, Louisa becomes much more expressive. Rachel and Steven help Louisa understand that suffering is a complex life long reality.
