One way to think of the Gradgrindian system of education would be the image at the end of chapter 1 where the children in the school room are compare to vessels "ready to have imperial gallons of facts pured into them until they are full to the brim." Filling children with facts deprives them of a sense of wonder and imagination. The questioning of Sissy and Bitzerin Chapter 2 emphasizes this. Sissy does not know the facts about horses, but she certainly can picture how a horse is trained what it can be used for. In contrast Bitzer knows the facts about a horse but does not know how to imagine or wonder about how they can be trained and used.
