Claudius is trying to convince Laertes to fight Hamlet in a fencing match. Claudius makes up stories about the famous Lamord who, Claudius claims, voiced his admiration of Laertes' fencing skill. This of course is just a lie to convince young Laertes to fight Hamlet.
