Hamlet's conversation with Ophelia in the third act is meanspirited. Hamlet is unjustly cruel, Ophelia is hurt and confused. The accusations and traits heaped upon Ophelia are certainly a result of his anger with his mother, but Ophelia has no idea what's going on. He tears her apart from the inside.... soiling her innocence.
