    What does it mean to say "the world turned upside down"? What has the outcome of the American Revolution changed in the world?

    Students may, reasonably, see this as a reference to the future, creating an instance of dramatic irony (where the audience knows what the characters do not). The existence of the United States could, reasonably, be seen as turning the world upside down. However, it may also be a somewhat more literal reference: the order of things, where the British were keeping their colonists down, has been reversed now that these colonists have defeated them in war.
