Guantánamo Diary Characters

Guantánamo Diary Character List

Mohamedou Ould Slahi

While imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay, Slahi writes this diary of his time there. After having been arrested originally in Jordan, he is held for over a decade by the U.S. government under suspicion of terrorism. Throughout the text, Slahi insists that he is innocent, even arguing with the authorities who arrest him, demanding a reason for the arrest, which they were loathe to give. Although subjected to torture and robbed of valuable years of his life, he does not denounce the United States. He concludes his memoir with an appeal to the American people that they question how they allow their government to conduct itself in foreign affairs, especially in criminal cases.

The American People

They are the recipients of this text. Slahi clearly addresses U.S. citizens at the end of the memoir, pleading with them to learn from his experiences. He urges them to consider how they allow their government to conduct investigations oversees as well as within the prison system.

The U.S. Government

As an entity, the U.S. government plays a major role in Slahi's narrative. This is the force which responds to the Jordanian police's suspicions, with brute force. They arrest Slahi without even giving him a reason. After receiving a confession -- after years of imprisonment and torture -- they relent and treat him better.

The Canadian Government

Having lived in Canada for years, Slahi decides to leave after an unpleasant encounter with the Canadian government. They suspect him of involvement in the Millennium Plot after they discover a man in Slahi's mosque is responsible. Nevertheless, they have no evidence to suggest Slahi's guilt, only suspicion by association.
