Wealtheow is something of a paradox to Grendel. He is moved by her and compares her to his wretched mother. It is Wealtheow who keeps him from attacking for such a long time. Grendel observes that Wealtheow is “servant of common good.” This perplexes Grendel. Still Grendel knows she is a calming force on the King and all the thanes. Her demise would be devastating. When he finally attacks he exposes her sexual organs and is again reassured that she just a woman and not special after all.
