Why does the convict protect Pip by saying he stole the food from the village? Explain “‘A man can’t starve; at least I can’t. I took some wittles, up at the village over yonder’” (682).

I think Dickens is setting up Magwitch as the as a poor, but kind and decent underprivileged poor convict. This foreshadows who Magwitch is later in the story.
