Why does Pip refuse to take any more of Magwitch's? do you think he made the right choice?

He takes the moral "high road" trying to seem more civilized and law-abiding than Magwitch.  He fears that people will scorn him if he continues to accept funding from a criminal.  It seems somewhat pretentious to suddenly be so "upright" when he has been perfectly willing to accept help when he thought Miss Havisham was his benefactor.
