I think that not marrying is the price Pip had to make for his obsession with becoming a gentleman. He simply missed out on the chances with people that mattered or even meeting people that would matter. Ms. Havisham pretty much ruins things for Estella and Pip. Still, even there, Pip refused to seize the moment when he could have.
