Who is the boy and why did he and Pip fight?

The "pale, young man" is Herbert Pocket. He wants to fight and explains the rules to Pip..... Herbert is cheerful when the fight ends, even after receiving a bloody nose and black eye. For Herbert..... the fight was all in good fun.
