What is Pip’s situation at the beginning of the novel?

In Chapter One, Pip, an orphan, is visiting the graveyard. Pip live with his sister and her husband, Joe. The first chapter also introduces Magwitch, the convict that insists Pip bring him food and a file to remove his shackles. Magwitch threatens Pip's life if he doesn't comply.
