What is a second father? What does Magwitch mean by this?

There are many definitions for a "second" father..... there are step-fathers, mentors, coaches, family friends.......

Magwitch was a second father in the sense that he became Pip's provider. He gave Pip the finanacial means to better himself and rise above the social class he was born into.
