Great Expectations

What does this sentence mean?

In great expectations it says: "...not to mention his smoking hard behind, as he stood with his back to the kitchen fire to draw the damp out: which was not calculated to inspire confidence (chapter 6 - paragraph 4). Does it mean that he is on fire?

Yes, this sounds like his back was too close to the kitchen fire.
