Herbert Pocket is a good contrast for Pip as they grow up. Their first encounter is at Miss Havisham's where Herbert challenges Pip to a fight, losing feebly but gallantly. pip acknowledges at this time-

His spirit inspired me with great respect.

Herbert is a good natured and generous friend who shares Pip's experiences and advises him on ways to succeeed as a gentleman.
