Great Expectations

In this sentence, what is it saying? Specifically, what is it telling us about Drummle and Pip?

Between Mr. Pocket and Herbert I got on fast; and, with one or the other always at my elbow to give me the start I wanted, and clear obstructions out of my road, I must have been as great a dolt as Drummle if I had done less.

Drummle is another student and boarder of Matthew Pocket. He is a moody, disgruntled "spider" but comes from an upper-class family. Pip is meaning, in this quote, that between Mr. Pocket and Herbert he should be a wiser and better student who could navigate through obstacles. If not, Pip fears he would be as dumb as Drummle.
