Mr Pumblechook is getting Pip ready to take him to Satis House; as they sit for breakfast he randomly begins quizzing him in multiplication. He's concerned Pip won't make a good showing with Miss Havisham. I guess he wants to see how bad or embarrassing it will be..... the family definitely wants these visits to continue, as it's to their benefit.
