Although Great Expectations does not fit into the Bildungsroman genre as neatly as other novels of Dickens such as David Copperfield, it can certainly be considered a Bildungsroman novel. Pip is motivated to move beyond his situation by his awareness of class differences and seeks to improve himself. It takes a long time for Pip to accomplish the kind of moral and psychological development associated with the main character in a Bildungsroman novel. Pip exhibits selfishness that stifles his progress until the climax.
