Jo Gargery was certainly preferred by Pip to his sister, Mrs Joe. Joe was more of an ally and confidante than a caregiver, and Mrs Joe was a tyrant who bullied both of them. She would beat them with a stick, named Tickler and specially kept forthe purpose. They were both dosed with Tar-Water when deemed unruly or just irritating to her. Joe was gentle, simple, loving and kind. Mrs Joe was cruel, vicious, cold and mean.
