We all strive for something better in life. We want things to get better: we expect it.The title refers to Pip's expectations for better things to come once he is a gentleman. Of course, expectations and reality seldom measure up. Sometimes you get what you want only to discover it is not what you need. Pip discovers this. The title thus becomes a little ironic to our protagonist.
