Joe Gargery wants to be happy and successful in his own business. Pip, however, wants to be financially supported and successful as a gentleman.... his goal has nothing to do with the work, but rather, the status.

Miss Havisham wants to create a hardened woman, who will break hearts, using Estella as her tool. Estella, in turn, becomes what Havisham has groomed her to be. Havisham, however, never thought her lessons would extend to Estella's feelings about her.... she is deeply hurt by what she herself has created.
