What purpose does Miss Ruby play in “Playin with Punjab”?
Miss Ruby is an outsider. As a social worker and someone who does not live in the neighborhood (she lives in Brooklyn), she is able to offer a perspective on the neighborhood that the natives cannot. For instance, Violet would not be able to tell herself that folks should have voted if they wanted Punjab in office. Violet also would not have been able to convince Punjab to run for office in the first place. But Miss Ruby can do that because of her status as an outsider.
