He has been abused and traumatized by his mother his entire life, and he is immediately returned to her when she arrives for him, only to be ties up and locked under the stairs with his baby brother. The infant dies, Willie barely survives. In the end, he is taken in permanently by Mr. Tom, who has grown to love him like his own.
