What was William's life like before he met Mr. Tom?

Willie lived in the city, in a small flat. His family had little money, and they did not have enough to eat. His mothers was physically, emotionally, and verbally abusive to her son. Though he attended school in the city, Willie didn't like it...the headmaster shouted all the time and hit his students' knuckles.
