when did orwell's elephant-shooting occur?

This is near the end of the story. At the bottom of the hill is a road, then the paddy fields. The elephant is on the other side of the road feeding on grass. When the narrator finds the elephent and shoots it many times. The Elephant does not die right away but suffers for a half hour.
