Shooting an Elephant

The author's dilemma is whether or not to shoot the mad elephant that has gone on a rampage, but since settled down and returned to its gentle state. Should he do what is expected and what the spectators are waiting for? Or should he do what he believes is right under the circumstances. Thus, his dilemma is to shoot or not to shoot.
