Furies of Calderon (Codex Alera Book 1) Background

Furies of Calderon by Jim Butcher is a book that tells a story of an empire that for years has been fighting against hostile races that live in the world. The narrative is an epic fantasy genre and the author uses an imaginative world to explore characters’ conflict with furies. Alera is the name for the imaginative world. The story begins with Amara going for a graduation exercise where on the way she meets her teacher, Fidelias. Basically, Amara is espionage for the First Lord of Alera, Gaius Sextus. However, Fidelias tricks and betrays her although she manages to reconnect with First Lord.

First Lord uses Amara as a spy and when things turn against her in the first mission, First Lord sends her to the Calderon Valley for another mission. The story then shifts to Tavi, a fifteen-year-old boy, who stays with his uncle Bernard. Alerans use their special gift of fury-crafting in their daily activities. However, Tavi has no fury-crafting skills and he only uses his wits. One day, he loses a sheep and while searching for it alongside his uncle they are invaded by a Marat warrior group.

Jim Butcher presents Tavi as an enigmatic character who uses his wits and powers to conquer the furies. Tavi escapes from the deadly storm of furies to save his life and that of Amara. Definitely, he fights with intelligence, unlike other characters who are using magic powers. Butcher focuses on the challenges faced by characters to explore the principles and ethics of modern society.
