Booby Miles is more self aware and mature by the end of the book. In Booby's case, this is a sad thing. His dreams of making it to a big college or the NFL are dead. Booby sees that whatever attention he received was only because of his football. Booby is a broken man who is beginning to understand the hash realities of America. He sees how difficult it is to be a black man in America without the promise of football grandeur.
