Why does Victor ask Elizabeth to retire without him? What sends him running to the bedroom?

Victor is worries about the monster showing up. He certainly wont sleep. He asks Elizabeth to retire for the night so he can search the house. Victor hears a scream from the room. At that moment he realizes it wasn't his death that the creature had planned.
