why does shelley end chapter 12 on an apparently optimistic note?

It depends on what you mean by optimistic............ the creature yearns for acceptance and the chapter ends with our seeing him with a tiny glimmer of hope; just enough hope to make us wonder, but not quite enough to make us believe.
