Why did Victor need to keep his experiments a secret?

Initially he was messing with stuff that was pretty sacrilegious. Dead body parts and creating life would have been frowned upon by pretty much everyone. After his creation, Victor is horrified at what he thought he had unleashed upon the world. He tried to keep it a secret.
