Victor Frankenstein claimed that he wanted to better humanity by creating a separate sentient being,

"A new species would bless me as its creator and source; many happy and excellent natures would owe their being to me. I might in process of time (although I now found it impossible) renew life where death had apparently devoted the body to corruption."

Victor thought he might conquer death and provide the means to eternal life. If you examine the quote more closely it becomes evident that Viktor was more concerned with being God. He relished creating new life that would look to him as creator. Unfortunately Victor is repulsed by his creation and, unlike God, cannot handle the repercussions
