There are actually many tragedies that happen in Victor's family, but if you are specifically referencing chapter 7 this tragedy is referencing the death of Victor's younger brother, William. After walking with his father, Elizabeth, and brother Earnest, William ran away to hide himself, but did not return. The group searches for him for a long time, and Elizabeth decides that they should return to the house as he may be there. He was not there, so they continued their search until Victor's father finds him at five in the morning, stretched on the grass livid and motionless: the print of the murderer's finger on his neck.
